I have double jaw surgery next year and this week the doctors, surgeons and I have been discussing how i will be during recovery if i get double surgery because I have broken my nose once, shattered it once, and had surgery on it 4 times in the last 2-3 years (cant breath well through it and it is 'partially' collapsed inside). No one will have had such traumatic experiences to their face (specifically nose) like I have but was wondering if anyone has had trouble breathing or breathing while sleeping right after surgery during recovery? Any info would be helpful :)

I was given Sudafed ( a decongestant) in the hospital and for a week and a half after surgery which really helped me with my nasal congestion. Also I was given a saline nasal spray which I used that also helped loosen the congestion. After the surgery the nose tends to get really congested with blood and stuff so most of my breathing was done through my mouth when I was really congested. There was a couple of times when I would wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I couldn't really breathe but I would sit up take some deep breaths and try to relax which helped.

The breathing was definitely the most difficult and uncomfortable issue I had to deal with the first few days. My OS prescribed me sudafed and a saline nasal spray. For 4 weeks, you're not allowed to blow your nose because you might rupture a blood vessel. The sudafed did help but I didn't think the saline nasal spray was all that great. What I did was take a q-tip and cleaned my nose a few times a day with hydrogen peroxide. That helped a great deal. I'm almost 2 weeks post op and since my surgery, if I bend my head forward too much it started bleeding :P It's stopped now though! Instead of sudafed, I also recommend mucinex d. It's a nasal decongestant and it also helps loosens/thin out mucus.
