Hey Jaime,
Congrats on a successful surgery!
As for my lips, those took about 3 months to get back to about 75% which was enough to comfortably eat again while being able to feel if something was touching my lip. It took a full six months for my lips to get back to 100%, but again, I didn’t miss that 25% in the meantime much at all.
As for my whole face, that took a bit longer than my lips, but only by a month or two. For me, the feeling seemed to radiate out in a circle starting from my lips, then the skin right around my lips, then down to chin and up to my cheekbones.
Everyone’s healing and recovery rate will obviously be different, but the average times seem to be anywhere from 3 months to over a year to gain 100% feeling back.

hey guys! today is day 5 after my jaw surgery! I am recovering pretty well, but the only thing that i am worried about is the numbness on my lower lip and chin...my surgeon cut a nerve. he told me that it may be permanent but because i am young, he believes it will heal itself over time! I am 18 and I am praying to God that i will heal completely and be back to normal soon! I do feel a lot of tingling and "ant bites" on the are that is numb. is that a good sign? please help out! thank you so much guys!!!

It's true that people recover at different rates. I'm at 3 weeks after my surgery and only the left side of my lower lip as well as my chin are still numb. My surgeon said tingling and itching in the numb areas is normal because it means your nerves are healing. I guess the only thing one can do is be patient.

if anything being young helps! I was told the younger the better for healing. Im 18 and just had my second jaw surgery 10 days ago. I was 16 when I had my top jaw expanded and I regained almost all the feeling back. Right now i am starting to get feeling back in my bottom lip. I believe tingling is a good sign since it means like there is still some feeling if you can feel that. With my last surgery it took about 2-3 months before I got most the feeling back and at about 6 months before it ends up being basically what it will be. After a while you get used to it and it doesn't bother you much.

Hi! I wish you all....the best, in your recovery and new life!
I had my lower jaw surgery done 31 years ago! The numbness lasted for almost 2 years, but, the numb area lessened in size, during that time.
It was the best decision of my life! As the swelling decreased, my self esteem rose.
Congratulations to all!!Posted 3 months ago # -

Hey everyone! Such a blessing to find this website/ thread!
I had a huge surgery in 2010 to correct my underbite, and although I feel SO thankful to have had the surgery, it has now been 2 years later and I still have absolutely no feeling in my upper lip/ right side of my face. The Dr said numbness was to be expected for weeks post Op or even months post op, however as I said it's been 2 years and I still have seen no improvement.
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but when I eat or drink a beverage, I have to be SO careful or else it will dribble down my face without me even feeling it. Also, due to the numbness of the right side of my face I can only chew with the left side in fear of accidentally biting my tongue and not realizing it.
I am 23 years old and I was wondering if anyone has experienced any similarities and still regained numbness even after 2 years, or if there is anything that anyone has tried to "regain feeling" in their faces that worked successfully for them?
Thank you so much, This is such a wonderful site.

Unrelated but my grandma had numbness after having some lower teeth pulled out, and regained part of it back perhaps 10 years later (or some ridiculous amount of time, where she had just accepted it'd be permanent).
If your nerve wasn't cut, there's always a chance I'd say.
