I'm 3 weeks post op. I had some discomfort, but never any pain. In the recovery room, they asked if I were in any discomfort, I nodded yes, and they gave me some pain meds which helped. You will probably be either wired shut or have elastics in your mouth, so you won't be able to open your mouth to the point of hurting yourself. But when I talked (as best I could) after surgery, there was no pain. If I talked for a significant amount of time, my jaw got tired and sore/throbbed, but that's about it.
Good luck! :)

I was trying to talk immediately after surgery. Nobody could understand me though! It won't hurt your mouth to try and talk but it will be pretty uncomfortable (I wouldn't describe it as pain) I wasn't wired shut and didn't have elastics until a week post op so it' different for everyone. The three people on my ward who'd had jaw surgery were all talking a few hours after surgery. You'll feel pretty groggy and probably have a sore throat but just be gentle with yourself and I'm sure you'll do great!
All the best with your surgery!Posted 9 months ago # -
Thanks..also, I'm going to be banded shut rather than wired..how much can you open your mouth after surgery?

If you're going to be banded 'shut' then I guess you won't be able to open your mouth at all and will need a liquid diet or use a syringe.
I just had elastics either side at the back so was able to open my mouth as far as I could manage. It was enough to get a tea spoon of food at a time for the first couple of weeks. My lips were pretty swollen abd I couldn't feel them so it was a bit hit and miss trying to get food into my mouth! I could eat whatever I wanted so long as I didn't chew anythingPosted 9 months ago # -
how far could you open it with elastics?

As far as I wanted to! I could yawn although I couldn't open my mouth as far as it wanted to go. It depends how they use elastics for you. Mine are only being used to re-train my jaw muscles as they move up and down. Some people have elastics that hold their mouths compeltely shut though. It's different for everyone.
