    Hi there,

Firstly, thanks for the starter of these forums- they have been a tremendous help in researching the procedure.

I'm 24 years old, and have a class 3 underbite. I am told the best option is to go for jaw surgery after around 12 months of braces. I understand this is not out of the ordinary.

I called up the Max-fac surgeon, and was quoted 12-20 thousand dollars out of pocket cost, as I don't have health insurance. I'm thinking about going on a plan because the wait will be 12 months until I can claim, but the braces will take 12 months as well.

I don't understand insurance policies at all! Can anyone in Australia (Victoria) please explain to me about the policies, and if they wouldn't mind sharing their costs, this would be great! I'm a student and will be responsible for all the costs, and it all seems so daunting right now. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi

I also have an underbite, I spoke to my surgeon today, if you have a healthcare card you can get the surgery done at a public hospital as a public patient and all cost are covered, if u go through a private hospital it will cost u $6000k + Good Luck!!

i'm in WA. my braces cost $8000 but i think i have got about half back through private health. braces are not covered at all by medicare. the surgery is costing about $10,500 but will get about $3000 back from medicare and medibank. the anaesthetist is charging about $3000 but again get about $900 back from private health and medibank. you generally have to get your wisdom teeth out prior i think. mine cost $1000 but got money back (can't remember how much sorry!). also think about the hospital costs and make sure you are coverd for an ICU bed! sorry it so general but i hope this helps!

See the thread titled 'cost of jaw surgery in australia'. My cost breakdown is on there. And yes, definitely take out private hospital cover now, then in 12mths your surgery will be heavily subsidized :)
