Hey, so I read a lot about jaw surgery and talked to orthodonist and plan on talking the surgeon soon. Nobody I've talked to yet had a clear idea of what I should be looking for when purchasing health insurance. I currently do not have it, and definitely cannot do the surgery without it. Its the only thing holding me back.

Would you guys just sharing, if you know, who your provider is and what I should be looking for when shopping for health insurance. It would really help me alot, like I said its the only thing holding me back as of now. Thank you!

I share the same thoughts....I have not chose an insurance plan yet and would also like to know where are the best places to go and how to minimize my out of pocket expenses. I am also interested to know what the average waiting period is for insurance companies before they will cover anything. Any help is very appreciated!

Well. i lot off people judge me because of my insurance. but it is the absolute BEST for dental! Which is why I have it, no other reason. Kind of putting myself out on a limb here because no one really knows. hahaha

And let me tell you; my plan- is FREE. 100% paid for as far as i know. I had been approved and EVERYTHING :D only $4 dollars in lab fees. There is a catch, if you don't already have surgeons and orthodontists you'll have to get referrals and approvals!

I am on the access insurance. I know, i know, it's the welfare card and a bit embarrassing (or a lot-but I have to get my jaw fixed AND save for college) because people automatically assume that I have kids and irresponsible.

But I don't have kids; as far as irresponsible? I really don't know, lol. I don't get any other benefits besides regular checkups and dental. So I am still under my mother's, she can't work because of her health.

Everything that i get HAS to be done before my 21st birthday. So my time frame is going smoothly.

hope this helps! I'm not sure about anyone else's insurance, but this is what I have and it's working. Don't take no for an answer! It's your life

    ;)

    Hey!
I am 19, and I have a Class 3 under-bite.I'm having maxillofacial jaw surgery(the top and bottom jaw surgery)and got my braces 5/21/10.
Just got news that I "may" start prepping for surgery in October 2011! Great news because I was originally told I'd have braces for 2-3 years!

Nice, glad it worked great for you, not available for my state though. I'm also above income level to get medicaid, but not high enough that I can freely purchase insurance without a care. Yeah, Im in that group :(

Anyone else mind sharing? Is there someone with a national insurance company?

    Hey Vclw,

I had Anthem insurance, based out of Virginia, but I think they are in at least at least other areas.

I remember there was definitely a waiting period, and it was between 1 to 2 years, which worked out perfectly, because it was that long from the time I decided to get the surgery anyway.

I'm sure you can call your local insurance providers and ask them directly, as orthognathic surgery is fairly common, so they should know the exact details.

    Where are you located?

I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

Thanks for your reply Brandon. Im located in washington state. I always wondered if you could ask them straight up, without having them deny you or raise prices. Im not sure if there is private messaging on this forum, but would someone mind sharing what they are paying? Just so I could know what kind of prices to look for, I realize theres a lot of factors that come into play for pricing, but maybe just a ballpark?

    Hey Brandon!
I just took a look on Anthem's coverage page and I am confused. I know I have to wait for m orthodontist to get my surgeon and go on from there, but If I have to get the surgery at a certain date, I thought it would be better for me to sign up asap, seeing as how I am also gong to play in a sport. Do you have any idea on the specifics of your insurance plan? I see all these extra coverages and such, but I have no idea which one I am supposed to choose and I think waiting for the surgeon would further delay the surgery.
    Thanks!

    Hey Rachel,

Yes, the sooner you get the insurance plan, the better, because there will probably be a waiting period before they will cover a surgery like this, but you don't have to wait until you have a surgery date to talk to the surgeon.

You can set up a consultation with the surgeon at any time to walk through the specifics of your case, while asking questions and getting his/her expert advice on the entire process, including insurance.
