HI! I had upper jaw surgery nov 21st and am currently wired shut. I have an odd pain thats hard to describe but it feels like a sharp pain in my cheek, right below my ear, and occasionally my ear hurts as well. I was wondering if this is common because out of all the pain I'm having, this is the most uncomfortable.
    THANKS !

it's the nerves in your jaw that are causing the ache. I'm nine weeks in and still ache whenever I open my jaw too wide.

I'm 4 weeks post-op and can relate. I get shooting pains in my temples and in the jaw joint and in my ears on a regular basis. All part of the process I think.

Good to know :) I have another question ... What were you guys able to eat directly after getting unwired ? I have one week left of being wired shut and have been day dreaming about food but I'm sure a lot of things I will not be able to eat . Does the food still need to be liquified ? If so for how long ?

I was not wired, but am still "lightly" banded (i.e., two elastics in a rectangular configuration on either side of the bite). I can only open my mouth about 2mm, so I can't get a spoon in, and I can't chew. So I have soup, milkshakes, and very thin blended stuff. (think custard consistency or apple sauce). I can't deal with any lumps at all yet. Surgeon told me another 3 weeks or so before I can tackle anything more ambitious.

Hi I just had both upper and lower jaw surgery on the 26th November 2011 and today I was in extreme pain with the same thing you were describing there. I wasnt sure if it was normal...it does comes from around my ear only on the right side though and its quite scary. I'm thankful for this blog...its good relating to others like me out there. Its tough going!!! It really is!!

Hang in there, Leanna. The first 3-5 days are the hardest, and it gradually gets better from there. I felt so much better around day 7-8.

Hey everybody! My 1st time posting on a forum relative to this topic. I'm exactly 6 days Post-op & yes, what Talkalot24 said is true: "days 3-5 are the worst." Worst with swelling, worst with pain, annoyingly frustrating trying to take your medications, etc. Which comes to my question & maybe this was answered elsewhere; I was only written 40 Lortabs to go home with(take every 4 to 6hrs as needed.) Well, now it's the day for my 1st post-op follow up & I'm down to 19! I have a VERY low threshold for anykinda pain(sends me into a full on panic attack.) What should I ask the doctor today regarding refilling my medication & on average, how many weeks post-op did you all continue your pain medications?
