I had jaw surgery in June to correct an underbite.

The good news... my teeth are now perfect and hopefully braces will be off in a couple of months.

The bad news... i got an infection from my lower left titanium plate :( Ive been on and off anti biotics and im getting SO fed up. The plate removal surgery isnt for 3 weeks and im feeling as depressed, run down and weak as i was after surgery. Im off anti-biotics right now which is probably why I feel so rough.

I know i can see the light at the end of the tunnel and it all should be fine and its hard because im an actress/dancer and want to get auditioning for work again but I cant because im still swollen :( I cant exercise much because then I go back to where I started and I cant drink or have fun because then I feel worse again!! Im going out of my MIND!

Anyone who had a plate removed after surgery please tell me about it! Is the swelling/pain/discomfort as bad as the actual surgery.

    Thanks

How long after the surgery did you get an infection? If it's been 3-4 months post op for you and you just got the infection then that's gonna make me paranoid now. I thought if you made it to 6-8 weeks post op with no infection then you're golden.

No I got the infection soon after surgery like a week after! Its just been flaring up and getting worse when im not on antibiotics. dont worry if your not infected straight after surgery you will be fine!

sounds like you are in alot of pain.
i got both my top an dbottem jaw broken back in April and after 5 weeks one of the bottom plates got infected and i just took a course of antibiotics and all was fine but just this week, 6 months later, its infected again so my surgeon has decided to remove the plate in the new year :( she thinks its the best thing cos if it gets infected once its ok but if happens again it has to come out. so she says anyway!

sorry to hear ur not doing well

I've read through these posts, and I would really appreciate it if you guys could give me some advise too... my little brother also has a metal plate in front of his chin, just below his front teeth. It was needed due to a fracture that happened when he was assaulted by a student in his gym class, who kicked him to the floor and dislocated his jaw and broke his chin.

He had surgery in 2006, and the plate has been in his chin for little over four years now, and after reading through these now I know why since then he always has to clear his nose and throat, so I guess I just realized that might be because of all what happened and the surgery. Gosh I feel so bad for him... But setting the whole sad incident aside... can you guys please tell me is it safe to have it removed?

I mean do you think that will cause him more problems to have it removed? I'm afraid of it causing him more pain and problems to his jaw or chin if we have it removed, but also think it should be removed due to all that what seems like sinus infection or blockage, and also I fear more infections... so we just think it's best to remove it now than later.

I know the recovery might be really bad, just like the surgery, a recovery of about a month, all liquid diet and... well I hate to see him like that again... but I think it's better to have it removed... right?

Thanks and I hope I get some replies here to help us decide and please share your experiences with having it removed and any problems if there were after that.

    Thank You!

Hi, I'm just looking for a bit of advice as well. I had my jaw surgery in November, I've had my braces removed and everything. Now, my bottom plate has burst through my gum and my jaws swelling up and I am going in to get the plates removed tomorrow. Does anyone know what the procedures like and if it'l be anything like the jaw surgery and basically what to expect? I'm freaking out as I just didn't expect this at all and only got a call today to be told I'm having surgery tomorrow :( Also will I have to stay in hospital again? I would appreciate it if someone could help! Thanks.

I just had both jaws done 5 1/2 weeks ago and doctor said he didn't like how the left side looked and said I'll have to have the plate removed once I'm healed. I've been doing my stretching exercises, but once I got to stick #14, I started getting serious pain on my left side and swelling. The doctor said to continue with the exercises but now I'm worried since that's the side the plate isn't sitting right. Calling doctor first thing in morning (which is a Monday) to talk to him.
