I am so glad I found this website because I really need to talk to someone about this stuff!
I am 19 and a freshman in college. I have an underbite and my surgery on my lower jaw is scheduled to happen in about 10 days!! ahh I'm nervous but also anxious because I really hate my bite and I want it fixed. Only my family knows about my surgery because I would feel really awkward describing it to my friends.

So anyways, i just have a few questions...

    1) I have about 10 days to recover post-surgery because we have fall break. What can I expect in terms of my face around the time a return to school? Will the puffiness/bruising be really obvious? Will I be able to talk okay? (My mouth won't wired shut)
    2) I know I will have to sleep at an angle for awhile. Is it hard to sleep like that?
    3) What activity is easy to do during my recovery...did it feel okay to read/do homework?
    4) I had my wisdom teeth taken out about a year ago, is the post-op pain comparable?

    Thanks!

    Hi Elyse,

Glad you found the site, and congrats on being so close to the actual surgery!

    1. If your mouth won't be wired shut, then that means your surgery shouldn't be very severe, relatively speaking, especially with only having to move one jaw. While it will vary from case to case and person to person, you should definitely be talking easily before then, and your swelling and bruising should be significantly reduced by then too.

    2. Not for me, but I'm used to sleeping on my back anyway. There may be an adjustment period at first, but you'll get used to it pretty quickly.

    3. Yeah, any non-physical activity shouldn't be a problem. You just don't want to try working out or running or exerting yourself too much while the incisions are healing.

    4. My wisdom teeth were a lot more painful than the actual surgery, because I didn't experience any pain from the surgery at all, just lots of pressure and discomfort, so hopefully it will be less for you too.

If you have any other questions, just let us know, and good luck with the surgery!
