Background and Question: I had my upper jaw impacted 5 mm and brought foward 2mm, but only have plates around my nose area. There is nothing supporting the back portion of my upper jaw. Is this normal? I'm so afraid my jaw is going to shift and I'll need another surgery.

Also, I'm only 5 weeks post-op and my surgeon said I can eat whatever I want, but I'm worried that I might be hurting something. I have been trying to chew things like I normally would, but it feels weird (lots of pressure) and seems to make my face swell up afterwards. I also worry that the elastics I'm wearing could be hindering the healing process and pulling my upper jaw downwards. I was never wired shut and have been given liberties from day one that seem abnormal after jaw surgery. Any info or comments would be appreciated.

hi, if you have plates (like me) you should only have them around the nose area. The bone will heal itself and there is no need for any plates any further back.

I'm 6 months post op and allowed to eat anything I want but there are still some things that just feel too hard to put any pressure on with my teeth.

There's no reason your elastics should be hindering your healing, they will be directing your jaw in the right direction as you need to 'retrain' your jaw as it's all in a new place.

I was told not to chew anything for six weeks post op but I was on soft foods after about 4 weeks. You've just got to be sensible about what you can attempt to eat at this stage but slowly it will get better.

Nothing you've said suggests there is anything abnmormal about your recovery as it's exaclty what happened to me and I'm fine!

Thanks RachelM. You're a true source of encouragement. I have a tendency to freak out and over think things...but don't we all after a surgery like this?? Thinking about the possibility of potentially having to do it over is too much to process.
