Recovery questions...

So the upcoming surgery is in a couple of months. I just had knee surgery last year, and had no trepidation before it. Not so with jaw surgery. I'm far more worried and feeling a little apprehensive. I guess, when your knee is all swollen, it's not such a big deal. When your face looks like an explosion, it's a bigger deal!

Kay, I have a few questions. I'm a teacher, so really, how long before you're able to talk for 8 hours a day? How long before the swelling in your face goes down and you start to look human again? And how long before someone can kiss you without hurting you? What are some things you guys did to entertain yourselves while recovering from surgery?

    Thanks for all your input!

    Hi Jewel,

I totally understand your concerns, and I had many of the same ones.

To answer your questions from my personal experience (remember, time frames and experiences could be different for every person):

    1. I was wired shut for 5 weeks, and I probably wouldn't have been ready to talk for 8 hours a day for at least 2 months. My jaw surgery was relatively severe though, and many people are wired shut for less time or maybe not at all.

    2. My major swelling lasted for several weeks, but I'd say I started looking human again about 6-8 weeks in.

    3. Kissing was interesting, because I couldn't feel my lips for several weeks, so it didn't hurt, but it was also completely numb.

    4. I watched lots of TV and played lots of video games to keep myself entertained.

I hope that helps, and if you have any other questions, just let me know.
