So I have started the jaw surgery process and got my braces on two weeks ago. They said that they may be able to aim to have the surgery as early as September so fingers crossed. I have a couple of questions for anyone who is willing to answer!

    1. How long normally do you have to have braces on before you can have the surgery?

    2. What is the recovery time including time in hospital?

    Thanks guys!

    Hi Jware,

    1. It can vary a lot, anywhere from a few months to a year or more. For me, it was just over a year of braces before surgery, and just over a year of braces after surgery.

    2. Again this can vary wildly, as can definitions of recovery. For me, I was in the hospital for two days and wired shut for 5 weeks, so the initial phase of recovery and returning to normal for me was over two months. Then, full recovery continued over the next 6-12 months, although I was fully functional during that time.

These are just my experiences, and I had a pretty severe case, having both jaws moved a total of about 11mm, so if it's a less severe surgery, recovery time is usually drastically reduced.
