Scared, unsure, and nervous...!

I am a 19 year old University student just finishing my second year. I had a sliding genioplasty to camouflage my facial asymmetry in September 2009 (just before I started University)because at the time I didn't mind how I looked much. Over time though my face has grown and the asymmetries have gotten worse so I have opted to get further surgery; but hearing everything I have to do before, during, and after has me a bit nervous.
I get braces in 2 weeks then surgery planned for June 2012.Everything is moving so quickly because my mothers insurance that I'm on will only pay if i get it done next year...
I keep thinking about all the downsides like i will have braces again and in my last year of university; I will be getting surgery right after I graduate around my 21st birthday (being a triplet I feel I would be so depressed being stuck in bed not being able to celebrate with my siblings). I keep telling myself it will be worth it in the end, my family and friends keep telling me the same, but not knowing anyone who has been through a surgery like this makes me skeptical...Figured posting on here someone may be able to tell me how they felt throughout the process before, during, and after...Was it worth it in the end?!

    cwade,

I just finished my first year of university and had my surgery 5 days ago, and I was not thrilled about having braces for my first two years of university. However, I've survived my first year and constantly forget about the braces! I really think that June 2012 would be the best time for you to get the surgery. If the surgery is well worth it, then do it while you're young, and don't put it off. I know a woman who had the operation done in her late 30s, and she regrets the entire thing because she felt she didn't heal as well as possible due to her age. This isn't true for everyone, however, I would think the younger, the better. Also, university is more forgiving, versus maybe having to try and schedule the surgery around your career later. Go out and celebrate your birthday AND your healing after the surgery!
I was very worried to have the surgery done, but 5 days later I can feel the difference, and I personally think that it's worth it to have it done while you can.

    Cheers,

    Kate

I would definitely agree with Kate. You need to have it done when the doctor deems it acceptable, and I wouldn't worry too much about your last year of university! Missing your 21st just means you have an excuse to make your 22nd birthday special (because there's normally NOTHINg special about 22!) Or you can have a, "look how gorgeous I am" outing as soon as you're able, and make THAT your substitute 21st celebration! You might regret it while everyone is out having fun, but in the end, you'll be the happier for it!

Do it now, instead of later when you have a career, or a family, or worse -both! ;-)

I just got double jaw surgery (top and bottom) yesterday morning. It's pretty bad but my plan was to just do it, that way there would be no turning back and I could just force myself to recover. The worst has yet to come but I'm just concentrating on the end result when my braces are off, implants are in, and I have no tooth-sized gaps or crooked bite anymore! Seems worth it to me!

I feel a lot better about having braces in my last year of university and getting surgery now thanks to knowing others have gone through with it.

Kayelle good luck with the recovery! Everything you said is so true. I have read about a lot of people who waited until they were older and regretted it... I think I will just make the best of my last year at school and go through with surgery after! :)

redroxmysox I dont think i will regret surgery i will just have to deal with the few weeks stuck inside while my friends are out..your right though knowing I will look amazing after will make it all worth it.. Make up for my 21st on my 22nd is a great idea actually!!

Starogre - Good luck with recovery! I will end up concentrating on the end result as well! I hope everything goes speedy for you!

You were all helpful Thanks loads!
