My name is Steve, I am 25, and I am having double-jaw surgery tomorrow morning (June 29, 2011). I have an underbite, open bite, and cross bite. I do not know how far everything is being moved because it was not something I felt I needed to know. If for some reason they tell me before I go in for surgery or anything, I will let you all know when I post after pictures. This is the first real surgery I have ever had so I am a little nervous about being under anesthesia, but I am not losing any sleep over it. I have had my braces on since July 2010.

My surgeon stated that my surgery will be 4-5 hours long. The unfortunate situation for me is that I do not have an insurance company that will pay for any part of this procedure; therefore, I am financing out $16,500 to pay for my surgery and it was about $5,800 for my braces (braces are completely paid for as of April). The nice part about my surgery is that my mouth will be banded shut, but I am on a "no chewing" diet. Not gonna lie... I was STOKED about not having to blend everything for the next month. :-D

I am really not sure what else to say here, so feel free to ask questions. I will check back several times between now and 7AM tomorrow morning.

GOod luck! 16,500 is not bad! I was quoted about 30K for bi-jaw. where are you having this done? your lower jaw already looks balanced to me... hmmm

I am having this done in Omaha, NE. Everywhere else near me would have been at least twice what my actual cost was for this surgery. My surgeon's office is located in the same building as the hospital, so his office has arranged a package deal with the hospital for these procedures because he is also a resident there. Not complaining about the price I am getting charged, just the having to pay it part! :-D

Q: How long does it take post-op before people generally can perform all tasks?

My mother is gracious enough to watch over Thurs-Sunday, if needed, but I told her I was only anticipating a couple days at most.

Good luck! I would say it was about 2 weeks until I could perform *all* tasks. Keep in mind, you cannot drive while on narcotics or other pain meds. Plus, I just didn't feel like doing anything, so it was nice to have someone there to make me food if I needed it.

It's a good idea to have someone else around to help for at least a week, especially if you're having double jaw surgery. I stayed at my mother's house for 2 weeks. The first several days can be pretty bad and I did NOT feel up to doing many things and I was glad to have someone else around. Your mom is nice to offer to stay with you. I think you should take her up on the offer and see how you feel. Some people recover faster than others. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones. Also make sure you have someone who can drive you to your post-op appointments. Good luck!

Thanks a ton for that, xdianao and ceanna! Anyway, I have to get a couple last minute things done and then I am off to Omaha for my surgery. I'll update with pictures in the next couple days.

hey, I hope everything went well!! I hope you wake up feeling good and ready for the recovery :) 16'500$ is about the normal price tag, it seems. mine was a bit more than 20'000$ but here in Switzerland everything is ridiculously expensive.. oh, braces were 13.500$... but it's just money and in a couple of years we won't remember the price but we'll meet the result in the mirror everyday :-)

right on. surgery went well. I am not nauseous, but I do feel like I got into a fight with a train... and lost... miserably. Also, catheters are the devil, that is all I am saying. I will take a quick picture of myself on my laptop webcam and post it for you all to see. Also, as near as I can tell, I still have feeling in my face everywhere and that makes me really happy!
