I would like to know if any of you had speech problems before your surgery that were corrected after surgery? Maybe I should post this is the after-surgery section (I'm not sure)

I have some slurring that is most noticeable with "s" words, but also with "j", and "ch". It bothers me such a great deal - has totally lowered my self confidence etc. I have cried many many many many times because of the way I talk. According to friends and family "I sound fine".. they are just saying it to make me feel better and because that is obviously the way they know me.. I know better! It's horrible and has really affected me.

Any stories about problems any of you have had and if they were correct MUCH APPRECIATED!!

Hi Brandy Jane I have just replied to your other comment! My ortho seems to think that Jaw surgery will help my speech problems a great deal, but i also have to see a speech therapist after surgery to help me work on it!

    Goodluck :)

Good news! I'm hoping to have some positive results with my speech. That was my main reason for wanting braces.. and the ortho was the one who informed me that I needed surgery. I was stunned that I needed more than braces. Although, the surgeon says there is no guarantee on the speech changing. This is wear I disagree because when I pronounce an "s" sound my air comes out the left side of my mouth instead of the front where it should. I believe after surgery when my jaws are properly aligned the air flow will be corrected! Hope I'm right =)

My first orthodontist said the same thing too-that they weren't sure, however then I was referred to another orthodontist in another state, and the new orthodontist seems much more confident about correcting my speech, and said that the reason i have trouble speaking is that my tongue works differently to close gaps in my mouth to make sounds- or something like that, and that with help from the speech therapist it should be able to be fixed when my teeth come together! So that kind of sounds like what your saying i think! Anyway I'm with you and are just staying positive, I have convinced my self that mine will improve after surgery! :)

I haven't really been able to find anything from anyone about speech problems yet so thank you for bringing it up, as I would be very interested to find out if other people have had any improvements with their speech after surgery!

I havent had any surgery yet but Ive had braces before and have a cross bite and overbite. I have problems with speech pronouncing "ch, s, t" sounds as my jaw shifts to the side for it. I feel your pain it sucks bad...my friends dont think its bad either but I saw a video of myself talking and I was majorly bummbed. I really came face to face with my speech difficulties. I am also working to be a singer and this definatly stands in the way of my craft. Hopfully will be able to get this fixed also! Goodluck with yours!

Good Luck to you as well. I really hope that surgery can correct it. I also hope that I am brave enough to actually get the surgery when it is time. I have a hard time deciding if I want to have it or not. I mean - 100% WANT to have it, but I am 100% scared to have it. I just don't know if I will be able to go through with it or not. I wish it wasn't such a major surgery - that's my hang up with it. I'm scared of complications! So I need to decide if I want to just live with myself the way I am or be brave and go for it. Sucks a lot because I wish I could wake up tomorrow and it all be over with. I let it get to me a lot and control my moods and my happiness level :)
