Hey guys! I'm finally ready for upper and lower jaw surgery. I'll get it done on Tue, July 19 2011. (yay!) I mean, im excited and anxious and scared. All mixed up. But what brings me here today is a question about my jaw alignment after the surgery. My surgeon said i wouldn't be shut wired, which was kind of a relief, and even though he took impressions of my bite he didn't make a split. Is it not necessary? Not everyone uses it after the surgery? Is it normal? If anyone knows anything about it, please tell me!!!

When I had my surgery on 6/29/11 (double-jaw) and on 7/6/11 (had upper jaw redone, not typical btw), my surgeon had created a splint. My understanding with the splint was that they used it during surgery to make sure everything was being positioned where it should be. Post-op I never had to wear it at all. Good luck with your surgery! Do not fret so much about things because if it is something you needed to know, your surgeon should have told you. Never hesitate to ask him or her if you have any questions or concerns before or after your surgery. Hope that helps!

Hey, I'm the same as SJS. My surgeon used a splint to line everything up during my double jaw surgery but it was removed before I was woken up. If your surgeon has taken impressions then there is probably a splint somewhere that you may never see but will be used (although they sometimes try it out to check it fits prior to surgery). The idea is that jaws will be properly aligned during surgery and afterwards the main job is to just keep them aligned. This is done in a variety of ways. Sometimes using a splint, other times using wires or elastics to keep the jaw in place. In my case I've had none of these, just two elastics at the back on either side. I've always been able to open and close my mouth (once the swelling went down!)
All the best with your surgery next week. It's natural to be nervous but there's nothing to be scared about. Just stay positive, keep relaxed and don't expect immediate results (some people freak out if they don't look better within a couple of days).
All the best and keep us posted on your progress!Posted 10 months ago # -
