It feels weird, but it doesn't hurt! You won't really be able to open very far (maybe a centimeter) and brushing will be really limited, but it will feel great to do it!

I've went under before. When I had my wisdom teeth extractions (I kept one wisdom and he took 2 grown teeth that weren't growing too well). I was just as nervous too! I felt like I was driving backwards without looking behind me and no mirrors. I was freaked!

The hooked me up to an IV (hurt like a son of gun when they put it in) which they put a needle through the IV. The needle had the knock out drug to put me to sleep. They told me to count backwards from 10 (I made it to 8, lol). I tried to stay alert so i would feel the drug taking me under but I couldn't! The drug is VERY powerful! You won't feel a thing! Then it was as if I blinked and nothing happened. Only difference was that I was SO dizzy and confused a bit!

I didn't want to stand because I couldn't even make out their faces let alone keep my balance but they made me stand and walk down the hall and out the door! I didn't like that at all! I almost fell a few times! They wanted me rush out of there because they had other patients. Very rude and pushy. FYI: I never EVER went back to that doctor again. Now I have a wonderful, TERRIFIC team of doctors & a surgeon that I wouldn't trade for the world! :D

****As long as your comfortable with your doctor you will be fine! No worries! He'll walk you through and give you details! The IV is not that bad. Remember you'll be asleep for the WHOLE thing! Make sure you know how recovery will go. They should keep you for the day or at least over night.

I wish you the BEST of luck! And I am sure everything will be fine!

the surgeon removed my bands so that i could brush today and it felt soooooo great!...even though i could barely open my mouth. Then he dashed all my hopes and put 4 of the 6 back on. For some reason, I was praying i'd be some sort of "miracle healer" and they would stay off so that I could order myself an xl pep and cheese pizza with a side of ghetto nachos....oh well :(

the plus side is that i can talk through my teeth better with the 2 less bands in fron,t and i can somewhat breath through my mouth which is a big anxiety reliever. The downside is that now, instead of congestion in my nose, I have a lot of spit. I keep choking on it when i try to sleep. Any tips for that?...also how long before you all got to start transitioning to soft foods?

    Hi Crys-

It does get much better around the 2 week mark. I am almost 4 weeks post op and I did not believe that when I was told that, but it is true. If it gives any comfort at all, like I said, I am 4 weeks post op this Wed and I am wired COMPLETELY shut. I have no bands, I am wired top AND bottom to my splint. Talk about panic attacks????? Oh my gosh-I am amazed at myself for making it 27 days without being able to open my mouth one bit. My tongue has been stuck in my mouth this whole time, I have not been able to brush anything but the outsides of my teeth, and can only eat thru a syringe....still. I can't even really breathe thru my mouth. It has taken every ounce of my sanity and strength to get thru this, but somehow, I have managed. I FINALLY get the bottom wires cut in the morning, so I will be able to brush my teeth in about 8 hours. Hang in there-you are not going thru this alone and like I said, it really does get better.

Congrats Tara! I dont know how you did it. I can barely stand to be banded, so wires would have killed me. If you can make it 4 weeks completely wired shut, than I can do this. Good Luck and let me know how the wire cutting goes.

Hi Crys-it went well, thank you, but I am so sore and can open my mouth only about a quarter inch, but I will take it for now!!!! So, I have not been able to brush the insides yet because I just cannot get my mouth open enough. Yes, you can totally do this!!!!! Like I said, not sure how in the world I managed but I did, but I could never ever do it again!!!! I am such a claustrophobic person to begin with so phewwwwwww!!!! I am done with it now! Hope each day gets a little better (it will) and keep me posted on your progress!

Tara, wow 4 weeks! I am on day 7 and like you have the splint and wired completely shut, can barely breath through mouth and am claustrophobic. My heart rate shoots up from time to time and break a sweat even in the cold when I get the slightest feeling that I can't breath. It really takes a lot of self control to calm myself down. And on top of that, I have really bad allergies and congestion so that makes breathing even worse. I hope I don't have to go 4 weeks, but luckily my doctor said before and after the surgery that I would get my wires cut at the two week mark, so hopefully when I come in June 1st I'll be healed enough for it! Always good to see I'm not in this alone, especially when there are others out there like you and crys who are pretty much going through it at the same time! Take care, and good luck with the rest of your recovery!

A few questions though, have you had big blood and mucus nasty things come out of your nose or mouth? I've had trouble breathing almost to the worst possible point then not too long later spat out or pulled out of my nose those big nasty things. Happened 3 times already. And have you or anyone else for the matter been forced to slightly blow your nose just in order to breath? Many times I've been so stuffy that I had to blow just a little to breath, and I do get small amounts of blood coming out of nostrils. Hope I'm not damaging anything too much, but it doesn't hurt and I have to do it to breath!

jasonc, the bloody mucus coming out of my mouth or nose has not happened to me...YET. However, my surgeon did warn me at my last appointment that it will happen and is completely normal. Its like a clot making its way out of your system or something. He told me if and when it happens, not to freak out.

    Hi Brandon,

Just to your reply above did you surgeon recommend that you get your wisdom teeth out first before the surgery? My surgeon wants to perform both at the same time 4 x wisdoms and then lower jaw surgery. I just hope that he can pull it off.

Some people require wisdoms to be taken out as stage one and then allow 6 months for it to heal.

your reply would be most helpful
    thank you in advance

Yes, my surgeon recommended to take mine out a few months before the surgery, but I have heard of others on here having them taking out during surgery, so that may be a safe and effective method as well.
