Hey all JSBloggers, love the site, new and this is my first post.

So im going to start right in,
I've have quite an issue with my lower lip. My braces have been rubbing on the inside and my lip has been getting cutting up with repercussion of using wax on and off of the entire bottem row.

There was a point in time where I didnt have to use wax at all in my othodontic process because of how the lip adapts and "callouss" to the metal wire on the bottom row. Although, as my bite got worse and my lower jaw started to protrude more it felt as if my lower lip started to tendorize more which caused alot of discomfort as well as noticable cuts & redness.

My orthodontist did pretty much all he could to help it by bending the row of braces to rather parallel them to my teeth. Which helped a little bit essentially flattening them as opposed to them sticking out. Anyway I find myself still having to use wax!

I use (2) whole wax strips out of the small clear box by GUM brand to cover the bottom row when I go to sleep.

I use no wax during the day because its a big hassle having to take out and re-use (that much) wax everytime I eat or brush my teeth.

I am very concerned..I feel that the excessive rubbing, and the on/off games with the wax is just about enough to give anyone lip cancer. And to top things off I used to chew tobacco which is highly addictive... I was able to quit recentley about a week ago. Fantastic right?

Did anyone have the same problem prior to surgery? w/or w/out the tobacco obviously..

& How is your lower lip after surgery? Numb.Nerve dmg.Over irritated? Permanent lip damage? What else?

Im probably going to end up using wax after surgery and its going to suck...Solutions?Remedies? Questions for doc? etc.

Also what are some good questions for my surgeon in the pre-op on this matter and just in general?

Please feel free to fire back any imput.

    Thankyou much..and..knock on wood.

    Hey Gregg,

Gum irritation, caused by braces, is INCREDIBLY common; however there are a few people who are more susceptible to irritation that others for various reasons.

In my case, i have a very bad reaction to acidic drinks e.g. orange juice. which when added to the braces rubbing against my gums; caused cuts to develop.

In many instances, and hopefully yours, gargling salt water (common table salt and water) after meals and before bed can be extremely helpful!

I know it sounds too simple (and stupid) but hopefully it works for u
