Tearing up my lips

    Hi there guys! :D

I got my braces a few days ago now and they are tearing up my lips pretty bad. I was wondering if anyone had any tricks or something that I could use to stop the tearing. I am bleeding and it is a little embarrassing when I am talking because everyone is asking if i am okay, hahaha.

I hear that disolvable paracetmol helps heal your mouth fairly fast so I am going to try that! Other than that my orthodontist did give me some wax sticks to rub on the pointed parts so this doesn't happen but it doesn't stay on for more than a few minutes.

Any suggestions or ideas would be more than helpful!! :D
    THANK YOU! :)

Congrats on getting the braces on and starting the process, Jo!

Your lips and mouth will get used to the braces pretty quickly, but the wax was my best weapon.

I would break off a lot of it, roll it into a ball, completely surround any problem areas, which made it stay pretty well.

I agree with Brandon 100%. Your mouth will get used to it, but if they do they cut pretty bad put the wax on your braces in the cutting areas and your mouth should heal in a day or two. Use that wax! Pain in the arse to put on and stay on but oh so worth it. I've had braces on 1 yr 1 month and only had to use wax about 4-5 different times. Wouldve used it more but that was cuz i was being lazy

Thank you! I am just glad to get the show on the road, haha! Braces aren't as bad as I thought they were going to be but I am having a few problems here and there. Your site helps me a whole LOT! :D

I just tried out what you said and it's working great so far! :) My doctor gave me only a few sticks so I was using it sparingly but now-the more I use the better it seems to feel! Thank you Brandon!

P.S. I should be able to buy this at a local store, right? I probably use a ton! haha :)

Really? Only a few times, probably because the skin on the lips toughing up, too. I'll just brush a little harder than usual right before I go for my ortho tightenings so my orthodontist doesn't have too much of a hard time, haha. Thanks again jasonc!! :D :D

Yes, Jo, I got mine from Wal-Mart, on the aisle with toothbrushes and toothpaste.

When I first got braces, they irritated the inside of my mouth a lot, but as others have said, your skin does toughen up and you do get used to them after awhile. Putting wax on the brackets helped a lot until I got used to the braces. You can buy dental wax at any drugstore or just ask for more every time you go to the ortho. I actually use OrthoSil, which is similar to wax except it's silicone. I like this better than wax because the wax tends to melt a bit in my mouth and gets all yucky and hard to take off. I find that the OrthoSil stays on the brackets better and is easier to take off. I bought a 50-pk of it online, so it should last me awhile!

Oh wow! That's great! I am going to have to try that! I am going to Wal-Mart right now to stock up on all my ortho needs (wax/orthosil, floss threaders, mushy foods,etc.). Also to get the water pick as well. I'll see what I can find at the store, either the wax or the Silicon OrthoSil (I'll have to try that!).
Thank you SO much guys! You have saved me from a lot of grief! :D

Buy the water pik at costco. It's around $50 at both wal mart and costco but the costco version comes with a TON of extra goodies, including a portable extra one!
