This is a common question. Please add your top tips in a LIST FORM so others can benefit (PLEASE NO LONG PARAGRAPHS)

I'm in the UK and my top tips are:

    Hospital bag:
    - PJ's
    - change of underwear
    - baby toothbrush/paste
    - face wipes
    - iPhone or other smart gadgets
    - book or magazine
    - lip balm of choice

    Everything else should be provided.

    At home life savers:
    - Free sick bowls from hospital ( I took around 5).
    - tissues, tissues, tissue from the start - lots of dribble.
    - tap water lots
    - vasaline
    - ice packs
    - liquid drugs (for me but not everyone) given by hospitaI
    - pillows - at least 3
    - tv
    - corsodyl to rinse around wounds
    - baby tooth brush/paste
    - tee pee picks
    - tea spoons - I used metal ok
    - ensure or equivalent - great morning breakfast when congested & mouth is dry. UK order online.
    - arnica
    - DVDs
    - multivitamin - effervescent.
    - Elizabeth Arden 8hr cream (my splurge) - but stickier than vasaline for sore lips!!

I didn't see this on anyone's list so I'll add it.

    Favorite Items:
    > A few bibs for your never ending drool.
    > Gameboy/DS/3DS.
    > Oral syringes.
    > Straws.

    Suggested Foods:
    > Ensure/Ensure Plus.
    > Carnation Instant Breakfast.
    > Any sort of broth.
    > Tomato soup.
    > Baby food.
    > Life water.
    > Gatorade.

Avoid sweet drinks like soda because it's harder to clean your teeth.

In your hospital bag for post op:

A box of boost or special k protein drinks
A good face ice pack (one provided was far too small)
Lip Balm, my lips peeled scales for days after

I was given only jello for two days. There's not much nutrition in jello.

I'm in the UK as well. Ensure I think is popular in the states. It's just a protein shake which is high in calories (e.g. 300 in pre made up ones) & vitamins and minerals. There are other versions available in the UK but because a lot of people on here recommended I looked it up on the Internet - you can order on line from uk sites.

Not every one uses these but I found the ready made shakes fantastic for breakfast as my mouth/throat where always really dry or blocked up in the morning and these were great. I had them for breakfast for 3 weekS.

1 week post op today for upper and lower jaw surgery. Here's my suggestions:

    HOSPITAL

-A change of clothes? Honestly I got there, changed into my gown, and then went waited around until I was in surgery. I was there for 1 day in recovery and didn't need anything. I was sleeping on/off for the most part.

    EAT

-Syringes (I got a few from the hospital)
-Condiment bottles-great for smoothies. Faster than syringes. I'm now using cups and fill the condiment bottles with salt water, mouth wash etc.
    -Baby Spoons
    -Magic Bullet or good blender
    -A good meal replacement powder
-Frozen pineapple (natural bromelain helps with bruising and swelling)
    -Apple Juice
    -LOTS of paper towels

    SLEEP
-Advil PM or sleep aid. Dr. prescribed benadril but I didn't get it.
-Extra pillows a cushion to keep you elevated.

    OTHER
-Jaw Wrap with ice packs. I got one from "www.cooljaw.com" A MUST-since the hospital didn't provide one
-Lip Balm and Vaseline. Something that glides on smooth.
    -Dental pics/mini flossers
-Arnica cream/tablets and Bromelain. I can't tell if this has helped or not but my surgeon did say I looked good in terms of swelling. And I was very swollen just after surgery. Could not take Bromelain until 6 days post op when I changed bands. Arnica was easy to dissolve into the mouth.
