Hey,
So I decided to write my own blog because I really need advice. I am 17, and I have a really bad overbite. I had braces 3 years ago and my teeth are relatively straight, but they're all different lengths. When I smile this isn't really a problem because my teeth look alright but at rest, people always say I look like a rabbit- and being so insanely self conscious about my teeth it makes me pretty upset. I got told a few years ago I needed surgery for my bottom and lower jaw, and i've always been really keen to get it. But my parents are soooo against any form of cosmetic surgery and get really annoyed when I bring it up, and also it is a lot of money to pay for your teeth. However my teeth are the only real thing I'm self conscious about, i hate smiling and showing my teeth. So i wanted to know is surgery worth it- the time and the money spent? Because it would boost my self confidence so much, but there is also a few down sides to it, and supposedly insurance worth cover it because it is cosmetic surgery.
Thanks

It isn't cosmetic surgery! If you're having trouble chewing or biting then it isn't cosmetic. Also, if it affecting you psychologically it's not purely cosmetic either. I had my surgery for functional reasons more than anything else. I couldn't bite properly and yes, as it happens, I didn't like my protruding lower jaw much either but this isn't like getting a boob job, it's something that affects so much of your life and so many people NEED to have it done as opposed to just wanting it.
It's a lot of money yes depending on where you are in the world but a lot of people on here have had their surgery covered by their insurance as it's not a cosmetic procedure.
You're still quite young to be a candidate for it as you need to have stopped growing (which usually happens between 18 and 21 years old) but I'd say go for it. You've been told you need it doing. It isn't cosmetic and it'll give you back the self confidence you lack. Do you have any pictures you can post of your bite?

Hey there! I have the opposite problem (an underbite). Like Rachel said the procedure is not cosmetic if you're having problems eating and etc. I had an insurance company tell me it was cosmetic which was so wrong, so I switched companies and got approved for it. It isn't an easy process but if you provide enough information to the insurance company, it should be approved! As with your family...they should support you. I hate living with my underbite so I can imagine how it is to live with an overbite! Best of luck!!!

I agree with them (it's not always considered cosmetic) and I also want to add this: YOU CAN NOT PUT A PRICE TAG ON SELF-CONFIDENCE!
Maybe your parents really don't understand how much it affects you. I would suggest trying to talk to which ever parent you feel the most comfortable with alone and not talk to them together. Try to get them to REALLY listen to all of your concerns. I really hope it works out for you if you decide the surgery is what you want =)
