Ok I'm scheduled for surgery in two weeks and I'm kinda freaking out about this breathing thing that everyone seems to have trouble with. I mean, if someone wasn't physically able to breathe wile still knocked out/ doped up would the doctors make an executive decision and CUT A HOLE in said person's trachea (tracheostomy) and put in a breathing tube or something? Has/ will that happen or is the breathing problem not all that serious? I mean, I guess that I would take a little scar on my neck over a cross bite for the rest of my life but still it is worrying.

I have to say that I have never heard of that happening. I know that it is kinda hard at first plus fears of not being able to breathe just make it worse. You really have to learn bio feedback and how to calm yourself, it makes for a much easier time of it.

I thought I was really going to have an issue with feeling "suffocated' as I don't breathe well through my nose alone and feel claustrophobic if I have a cold. I thought I was going to wake up in the recovery room and just panic. It didn't bother me at all...your body just breathes through your teeth. Around the 3rd day or so when the congestion in my nose set in, it was a huge annoyance and hard to sleep, but not scary like I feared.

Don't worry. The absolute worst that can happen is you'll be forced to blow your nose just a bit to get whatever is causing the congestion out. Don't freak out about it, it'll make it much worse than it actually is. I freaked out a few times and what'd I do to make it better? Calm down and focus on breathing. You'll be ok! The worst "breathing" days were day 2-5. Day 4 & 5 were much better and I've been smooth sailing ever since. I'm at day 11 today and I can't wait for the wires to be cut. I'm going to eat an entire cow. Or just something as big as that.

I cannot breathe through my nose before or after the surgery. The hardest part is the first couple of days getting used to breathing out of your mouth while the teeth are closed. It just takes a lot out of you and can be tiring, but not terrible. I am only starting Day 5, but still have not felt claustrophobic like I thought I would have.

Ok thanks! Just wanted to clear that up...I think I'll also invest in a humidifier

I had a tracheostomy for 8 years, which was removed 10 years ago, so I experience slight breathing difficulties. I am 8 days post-op now from my jaw surgery and I didnt really have any breathing difficulties in the hospital, and my breathing is so much better now compared to the last 18 years of my life.
