I'll be 59, when I have surgery next spring! Glad to have found a group of surgery patients closer to my age! I am scared and think about the surgery everyday, and question if I should go through with it. Did you all have the same questions as surgery approached?

Hi, I am 54 and had surgery on my lower jaw to correct my overbite about five years ago. I also had my chin pulled forward. The surgery went very smooth with no issues. My problem is that I still have numbness to my lower lip and chin. I also feel like my lip is burning. Do anyone else have this type of numbness?

    Hi Bellka,

If it's been 5 years, that sounds like it may be permanent, which is a possible side effect of this surgery and tends to increase in risk as you age.

How severe or large is the area? Have you adapted to it for the most part after all this time?

    Hi Brandon,

This numbness is something that I can never get used to. The area of numbness is my lower lip, chin and bottom front teeth. I am very thankful that the damage didn't affect my sense of taste. I honestly would not recomment this surgery. If I had to do it all over again I would not have had the surgery. I suppose that my age had alot
to do with my recovery. Thank you for your interest.

Wow. Very interesting to read all of your statements. I am 9 week post op. I am 41. Had upper and lower jaw surgery done on 11/3/10. In the upper jaw they had to split the back by 8mm and stretch it out to make the upper wider and pull forward by 4mm and shift over 3mm to straighten my midline. The upper jaw is secured now by multiple plates and 23 screws. The lower jaw was then broke saggital(I think that's the word ) and shifted back and over. Secured with three screws on each side. I went home the next day. Very little pain but lots of numbness. Now I am still numb on my left outer nare, bottom lip and chin. On week three I developed a fistula between right nostril and pallet. Still can feel the area but the actual area is closed.
Overall I am afraid that the upper jaw not really grow together with my skull. I am chewing soft foods ....yay. but my surgeon said I should be able to eat anything. This is when I doubt things are right. Even tho I think I am doing great after surgery .
    Any input?

Hi, I'm 50 and just had lower jaw surgery 6 weeks ago, to correct bite-problems from a very bad fall over 5.5 years ago. (I literally fell flat on my face & broke my jaw in 3 places.)

Believe it or not...this surgery has been far more traumatic than the original fall. Back then, I was wired shut for 2 months, rubber-banded shut for several more weeks, and ate through a straw the entire time. And yes...this is worse. My bottom lip and my chin is completely numb, and my mouth is very distorted. I did not have these problems with the original surgery after the fall. I'm supposed to start chewing food now (pasta/chicken/fish), but I cannot even tell what my mouth is doing because of the numbness & distortion, and food is falling out of my mouth. There is no way I'll eat in front of anyone. I've seen 5 other people at this stage of their recovery, and they did not look lop-sided & distorted like I do. I'm scared, but am trying to stay positive.

Has anyone had to re-learn how to chew? Has anyone gone to physical therapy, and did it help with chewing? Are there other options? Anyone else have a weird, distorted, lop-sided mouth?

I wish I had done more research on jaw surgery, to have a better understanding of what to expect. This recent surgery was not "necessary" but was highly recommended. I wonder all the time if I made the wrong decision.

This blog has been extremely helpful and informative, so I thank everyone participating; it has been helping to alleviate some anxiety. I guess all I can do is wait it out. I am going to start acupuncture treatments this week, with hopes that it will facilitate the healing process.

I hope that sometime in the next few months, I can be one of the people that reports back in here with, "It was totally worth it; I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'm sooooo happy!"

I wish us all luck.... :-)

Well........ Heidi?? Not sure if you still visit here - but would love to hear how you're progressing now that it's been 7 months since your last post. I hope it's all going well! =)
