    Hey Brandon,
I really appreciate your site and all you've done. I'm 17, and a senior in high school and I recently found out my surgery is scheduled for Thursday, November 12th. That's three weeks from tomorrow. I'm so so so nervous. I go to get pre-surgical brackets applied November 5th. I had my wisdom teeth removed in June and that too was my first time being "knocked out", my first surgery [that I can remember anyway] and my first time being hooked up to an IV. I also have the same jacked up bite you once had: extreme cross-bite and under-bite. I also experience minor TMJ symptoms and was wondering if you did too? This involves clicking/popping of the jaw on my right side.
I'm pretty sure my surgeon said something about NOT having to wire my mouth shut but I'm not entirely sure about that. It only makes sense that it would be wired shut to prevent myself from moving it out of place. Then again, he said I could go back to school two weeks post-surgery, so who knows.
Also, did they prescribe you any medication to prevent/treat swelling? They told me they would.
And how long was it before you completely lost ALL numbness? I have anxiety issues about anything that impairs me to function normally for too long. Numbness is one of those things.
You've inspired me to "vlog" my whole experience. :]
Sorry if I've asked too many questions but if you could answer them, that'd be great.

    Thanks!

    Hey Jessica,

Yes, it does sound like we were definitely in a similar situation. I did have some minor clicking and popping before surgery, but nothing painful like some TMJ symptoms can be.

With a severe surgery, if they have to move both jaws a decent amount, then you will probably be wired shut, but maybe not, depending on your specific surgery.

They didn't prescribe anything to me for swelling, other than the standard ice and rest, etc.

I didn't regain 100% feeling for several months, nearly a year in fact for the last little bits, but I was fully functional and nearly forgot about the numb spots in only a few months.

The biggest thing is just getting the feeling back in your lips, so you can eat normally again, because you really don't do too much touching and feeling with the rest of your face anyway, so you don't even realize it's numb.

And I was so so so so nervous too, completely terrified, but I realized after that I didn't have reason to be that scared. It really will go by faster and easier than you think.

Good luck with everything, and let me know if you have any other questions along the way.

I can't wait to hear about and see your experience through your "vlogging".
