What did your surgeon charge?

Due to an extreme overbite I am going to have surgery on my upper and lower jaw. They are also going to redo my chin to match my new jaw. My question is if anyone knows the average cost of what a surgeon charges for this before insurance. I live in Los Angeles and I am going to a highly recommended doctor, but the price seems insane. I have to pay upfront and my insurance only covers a fraction. I have great insurance that will cover hospital, etc, but they say they consider the surgeon's cost above what is normal so they will not cover the whole thing. I am starting to think I should shop around, but I don't know if it would save anything.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

No, but I have heard of him. Does he have a standard fee?

I had consultations with surgeons charging anything from $18,000 to over $30,000 (LA - Kaufman in Beverly Hills). I'm sure there are cheaper surgeons but Southern California surgeons likely charge more overall due to the sky high cost of property and office space and a quality surgeon is well worth the extra money, even if you have to borrow to pay it over time. I'm paying a small fortune because my insurance company is terrible and only pays a fraction as well. But my surgery was successful and it is worth every penny, in my opinion.

I really don't know if I could cope with the grief of working out the costs and finding the money for surgeons and orthodontists. I paid nothing for either as healthcare in the UK is free. From the posts I've read you seem to have such battles with insurance companies over there along with having to find the right people to do the job. I found it hard enough just to get my head round the treatment and surgery let alone all the other hassle you have to deal with!
