I feel like we need a spot on this website just for eating and dealing with being wired shut! I don't know about anyone else, but it seems to me that it is harder dealing with being wired shut than it was to deal with the actual surgery. Its so frusterating not to be able to lick my lips or yawn, not to mention not being able to eat. Now, my surgeon chose to do the surgery where he didn't use and metal hardwrire, so I will be wired shut for 6 whole weeks. Aaaahhhhhh!!!!! The first week I wasn't hungey really at all, now I am and I'm already sick of this all liquid diet!!! So I was thinking we could all post food ideas here!

So far I have had a roast mixed with beef broth in a blender. Mac and cheese mixed with milk, cheese ravioli with sauce and water. I've mde mashed potatoes and green beans. Any other ideaas would help. I'm starving;) hope u guys understand;) I know its the end result that will make the difference and be worth it, but I guess I need encouragement to get me there. Time flies when your busy but for these first 3 weeks I am off work doing nothing and time is going SO SLOW!

I hope everyone will post some great ides here!

I know we all understand where you're coming from, Paula!

I stuck to some less creative options, but I'll post mine here anyway:

    Yogurt
    Applesauce
    Pudding
    Ensure
    Boost
    Meal Replacement Shakes
    Whey Protein Shakes
Watered-Down Peanut Butter (sounds gross, but tastes just like the real thing)

I'm Brandon, the creator of JawSurgeryBlog.com. I personally had upper and lower jaw surgery on October 30, 2007. Thankfully, everything went beautifully, so I'm trying to make sure everyone else's surgery goes smoothly as well!

Speaking of wired shut... My ortho and surgeon said something along the lines of "you won't be wired shut, we don't really do that anymore." Do they mean at all, or they mean not for more than a week? Seems like everyone so far has been wired shut for at least a week or two.

-Scheduled to have lower jaw surgery in April to correct an assymetric bite-

Hey, my surgeon said the exact thing to me. They dont wire you shut...you get surgical wires put in from your orthodontist and then during surgery they attach really strong rubber bands in millions of directions. At least thats what they did to me. So basically I cant open my mouth at all, but its not wired shut.

Yeah, I use the term "wired shut," but it's literally just several tiny rubberbands around hooks, like CL said.

You're still completely closed shut, just technically "banded shut," although I have heard of some people with less severe surgeries not being banded at all.

Well I am actually wired shut... no rubber bands... wired for real... have been for 3 weeks now :( next Monday my surgeon said he is gonna take the wires off and rubber band me shut. I had lower jaw surgery to correct my underbite and the dr didn't use any plates or screws. No fun. I am back to worl and starving. Still using a syrange to eat my liquids.

Very interesting, Paula. I haven't heard of a surgery using the actual wires and not using plates or screws, but at least you're half way there, stay strong!

I had top and lower jaw surgery severity right in the middle. Though im not banded shut. I cant open and close my mouth. I worry tomorrow for my first post-op that they might put bands on, but for now im a lucky one!

Yeah they really need to change their verbage. My orthodontist and oral surgeon both told me that I would not be "wired shut". My oral surgeon was confident that I'd be able to eat soft foods a few days after surgery so I planned to have the surgery (upper and lower) during my 5 week winter break. Little do I know waking up in the hospital I'm banded shut with thousands of rubber bands going in all sorts of directions and I'm told that I will be "banded" (aka no difference than wiring in my opinion other than rubber bands are probably more comfortable) for seven weeks. Boy was I not prepared for that. The eating is the hardest part, trying to find a variety instead of just drinking ensure, mashpotatoes, apple sauce, and blended soups especially now that I'm back at school. But in the end it is all worth it hopefully!!
