I'm going to have my surgery on December 8 to correct my overbite.I thought I have everything under control but now I'm way to scare about the "wire shut". I remembered in my last visit to the surgeon he said my mouth will be wire shut for a week but it seems that most of you guys have it for 2 even 5 weeks. I'm so scare I have started practice having my mouth close, but I feel that I start to suffocate. I'm so worry thinking that after the surgery I'll have blood and saliva in my mouth and i will choke. :(.

    Please give me some advices.

    Thank you

I was wired shut with wires for over 5 weeks. No rubber bands were used. I didn't see my tongue for over 5 weeks because I could not even make an opening in between my teeth.

I could only eat extremely well blended food. Anything that can be made into a smoothie-like state worked for me. Anything else just got stuck on my teeth and I had to spend a lot of time getting them off.

Hai everyne My name is Ashly i had my surgery 6 days ago and i am absoloutly devestated and frustraed being wired. i am such an emotional kid as well i feel like i want to pull everything out of my mouth . and i am sick i tired of the food ive been eating . today i went to see my surgeon, before my elastic bands wernt as tight as it is now so i could drink down blended porridge and stuff like that . and i could speak and people could understand me . but now they have tightned the band and i find it really really hard to even drink anything 100% liquid and i cant speak at all . i have to write down what i have to say to people. i am soo frustrated i never though i'd be craving for food this much. i am not one person who eats variety of food all the time ... i love mash potatoes .. i wish if i could atleast eat that . arhh ..
by the way i saw someone mentioning about peanut butter drink or peanut butter which you can water down . i would like to know about it . where do you get it . i typed that on google and i couldnt find any . please help. i am sick and tired of ensure.

one question .. how did you guys feel when you first started talking after a lng tym .
i see by reading people's comments that most of you guys had to put elastic bands for 6 weeks , but my surgeon said i only have to put them for 2 weeks?.. why is that ?

Yeah it's a huge pain being shut for weeks, but would you rather have increased chance of nerve damage or suffer a little bit more for life changing results? I haven't had surgery yet, but a little more suffering for a lifetime of new experience is well worth it.

I do however recommend eating or drinking lots of protein. Whey Protein is great, however some can taste bad, amazon has a load of brands with diff tastes. Currently drinking mint chocolate :)

hi ashley, im on day 9 post-op. do you like soups? my wife made me differnt varieties like cream of mushroom cream of chicken campbell's chicken noodle soup (broth only) it was good. with your corrected bite you should have a slight space available to allow liquids to pass through.1 yr ago we bought a health master which is a powerful 2.5hp blender/emulsifier and its perfect for what im going through right now so blend everything well and TAKE your time eating. the first couple of days i didnt have much of an appetite so it wasnt that bad but when i got home started eating more a I only wanted chicken broth and water and a Boost protein shake. to date i lost 25 lbls dont be alarmed i am overweight so i am getting a dual benefit from this surgery! a new smile and a new body. this will be the catalyst of a new ME! as far as nerve damage i did my research on the doctor himself. check to see if there are any complaints filed against him check for references. ask your orthodontist for recommendations and lastly as "Nostalgia" said, ask yourself is it worth it. be positive and continue your research

Today i made blended broccoli cheese so that i have it ready for surgery day. What you do is cook the base as it says to, you can find a recipe online for one. Then you take the broccoli separately and you boil it until it's almost falling apart and then you put it in a processor/blender with some of the water you used to boil it, but not all of the water, just enough to make it smooth. blend/process until smooth and then mix into the cheese base with a wisk and then freeze it and take it out as needed. Also split pea soup is good because it tastes just as good blended because you don't make it any differently then the normal kind, you just blend it up. a good site to find some of these soup recipes is http://www.allrecipes.com that's where i get a lot of mine. hope i helped!
