Why no ice after surgery?

My doctor says not to use ice once I leave the hospital. I didn't think to ask him why but I see other doctors have suggested the same (Dr. Arnett/Gunsen follow this philosophy). I see many do use ice for swelling control. Just curious, does anyone know why one shouldn't use ice after surgery? My surgery is 12/17, this Saturday at 7:30 am. Double jaw surgery on 12/17/11. BSSO mandibular advancement of 10 mm; two-piece le fort 1 with 3 mm impaction and maxilla brought forward 1 mm.

hey tara mine told me to use a heat pack or a warm cloth on the swelling as this will reduce teh swelling. its funny cuz i though it wud have been ice too.

but when i to use somethin warm on my face it feels good!!!lol

Becasue I read the ice restrics the blood vessals which means not enough blood will go to the area needing it most (broken jawbone) and blood carrys the nutriants healthy/healing bones need and when this is ristricted it will take longer for the bone to heal, but its good for swelling so you shouldn't have ice on the face for hours at a time only short intervauls.

I read, and also heard at the hospital that ice is unuseful for the swelling after 24/42 hours after surgery if this helps.

Yeah, it constricts the blood vessels and that isn't good when you're trying to heal. I iced the first 36 hours or so, and used heat the next 36, and by then I was good.

I have just had my planning session for my surgery and asked my surgeon this as I wanted to know.

He said ice for non stop for 3 days, then you can use heat as it increases the blood flow to the face BUT not for the first week.....
