    Sorry if this topic is created , i'm new hear and i wish to seek for advice.
    I'm not very good in English either so i hope everyone understand my problems.

    I'm a 19 year old ASIAN girl. Most of the asian girls have small beautiful jaw n chin, however i'm slightly the opposite. I've been tease for so many years because of my jaw.

    I have a 4mm underbite, i'm not sure it's a severe case or not, but i went to different orthodontist ask for consultation, most of them suggest jaw surgery.

    However, there's few orthodontist told me that braces might fix as well.Is a 50/50 chance basically but i won't change my profile. ( I don't really intend to change my profile (eventhough i wish to,but my parents won't allow me) ,so,i just want my underbite to be fix.)

    He was a professional orthodontist and he had a lot of certificate and experiences in the dental industry so i decided to trust my ortho. and go for a traditional braces treatment.

    I just started my braces treatment one month ago, and these happend.

    I was pretty upset because it seems like my gap is getting bigger and worse my problem.

    here's how my jaw looked like.

    Can anyone give me some personal advice/suggestion, wheter traditional braces will solve my underbite? or i should stop my braces treatment?

    Thanks in advance.

    braces will just 'mask' your underbite by moving your teeth into an un natural position, and utimatley wont fix your jaw.

    Your underbite looks similar to mine. Mine was only about a 1mm underbite before braces, but worsened with braces. My profile wasn't horrible, but you could tell I had an underbite. I too searched for an orthodontics who could fix my underbite with only braces, and none of them said they could. My bite would never be perfect just with braces and my underbite would get worse as I age. So we finally just decided to go with the surgery. I've had an underbite since I was born, and I knew I needed surgery when I was 12 or 13 years old. They couldn't start the process right away, because if you start the process while you're still growing, the chances of a relapse is almost 100%. So we waited for a very long time, and finally 2 and a half years ago, I got my braces on and I had my surgery exactly 2 weeks ago.

    I kinda went on a rant but your case looks really similar to mine so I thought it'd help you. If I went back to time and had to make the decision again, I'd still opt for surgery. Honestly, it wasn't that bad. I'm only 2 weeks post op but my swelling is completely gone and I felt no pain at all throughout the whole process. The biggest frustration is not being able to eat solid food and talk very well.

    Like the both of you, I have an underbite, and mine got worse with braces. I'm guessing because of the teeth straightening out and all the shifting. Ive had braces for a bout 5 months now I think, just went yesterday for a checkup at the orthodontist and he said that my progress is amazing, and I got a thicker wires .. Anyway, my surgery is planned to be in July of August, and he said I was a long ways away from surgery, but I'm hoping for it to be in the summer so I don't miss any school.. Personally, I wouldn't stop your braces treatment because if the dentist put them on, there's obviously a reason why he did, and to me they look like their working wonders for your teeth, and again personally, I'd consider with your parents on having the jaw surgery.. It may be frightning to some people but it will help in the long run, in my case I have an underbite and cross bite. And their going to move my top jaw forward and my lower jaw back, and re Aline everything. I'm nervous and excited, and even though it will change my profile, it will change it for the better . I wouldn't give up on your orthodontist just yet, they know what their doing, and somtimes things can be fixed on their own, and jaw surgery just may be your best bet. Hope this helped, :)

    I'm sure your braces could sort out your underbite but it would seriously compromise your teeth and bite. They would have to angle your top teeth forwards and slant your bottom ones back which long term is not going to be good for your teeth as you'll be chewing on the wrong parts which could lead to long term damage. I'm not sure many orthodontists would want to fix an underbite like this anyway.
    You have teeth like mine used to be and getting jaw surgery is the best thing I could have done for the long term preservation of my teeth. Previous generations on both sides of my family have all had full dentures so I was adamant I was going to do all I could to preserve my teeth and bite to make sure it functions as long as I do!
    I have no regrets about my surgery and it hasn't changed how I look very much (apart from that I now smile a lot more). You could always see how the braces help you and consider surgery later in life when you don't need to be infuluenced by your parents but I would say my only regret about jaw surgery is waiting until I was 34 to have it done.

    @madeinaday

    If your underbite was as small as 1mm did your insurance cover any of the cost? My underbite is really small as well, the top teeth go right under the bottom ones and even touch (just so you get the idea of how small it is) and I'm kind of worried the insurance company won't cover anything. Eating for me is kind of uncomfortable, my jaw clicks when I eat, and sometimes i have trouble hearing from my left ear but that's about it.
