I have my surgery on October 24th, which is 6 weeks away - things are becoming very real now and so questions are starting to form in my head and I am trying to find answers to!

I have found some really good advice and some great accounts of Post Surgery recovery which have been really helpful, but most of these either didn't have their jaws wired shut or only for a short period of time.

I am having mine wired for 6 weeks, and I was wondering if anyone can share their experience of having it wired shut for any length of time. I know I will need to have only liquids etc but I was wondering how people coped with this, how long you were in hospital afterwards for, how much you needed help with when you got home etc.

I was in the hospital overnight and left midday. I was too zonked out and could barely wake up to leave lol. You probably won't be wired but banded shut. I was able to open my mouth enough to get a baby spoon/fork in my mouth and use a straw. I barely ate the first two weeks since I was too tired and stubborn to drink shakes. I tried and the protein powder made everything taste like blood (at least it does to me hahaha). I ate chicken broth, and slurped down spaghetti-os and then went on a baked potato diet...I seriously ate baked potatoes
Everyday...mmm it was yummy. And no chewing involved. I also ate
Mashed potatoes and gravy almost everyday. Haggens has the best at their deli!
I didn't really need help when I got home and my hubby was at work all day so my sister was my nurse. For the first week I slept almost nonstop. I would wake up try to watch a tv show and fall asleep lol. My sister work me up for my antibiotics and ibuprofen when it was time and made me take my vitamins! I swear it was like she had two kids to watch after that week.
Sleeping sitting up was the worst for me, I normally sleep on my stomach and had a hard time adjusting... I would wake up on my stomach even when I tried to keep Myself propped up between 3 huge pillows. My face was so swollen after I woke up like that. It's been 8 months now and I still have swelling in the morning and numbness in my chin and lower lip but I would do it again in a heartbeat! Just looking at my teeth and jaw now makes me so happy!

I'm 13 days post-op now (lower jaw), wired shut for 3 weeks. Supports from friends/family will be great help during the recovery process. I advise you have someone to assist you for the first few days (3-7 days) they will be a great help. As for the meals, mine is boring, soup creme (chicken/mushrooms/corns etc), soy milk, protein shakes, juices and water. Just keep drinking, I lost just 2 pounds.

Just stay positive, don't worry too much over the surgery. I'm already back to work, doing the same routine before surgery (except exercises)

    Good luck to you Jayneylane

    Hello :)

When people say wired, they do tend to mean banded, I'm banded for the whole thing too.
I actually had my check up today, I'm banded shut quite tightly for another 3 weeks, then I get banded loosely for two weeks and then I have bands to wear just at night time.

If I remember right your on the NHS too? It might be a similar experience for you as well.

I went into hospital on a Tuesday, had my operation from 12:30-8:30 that day and went home on Thursday afternoon. On the Wednesday I was given a drink called 'Ensure' by the nurses, they do juice and milkshakes with all the vits&mins you need and clock up nearly 300 calories a drink. I slurped best I could over Wednesday and Thursday but I mostly spent my energy taking painkillers and having water.

I also have a wafer in, a small bit of plastic that fits in between my teeth to stop grinding and movement, that stops any spoon feeding or slurping like normal with a straw. I have to use a straw by placing it down the side of my mouth and using a squeezy bottle get drinks in through the back of my teeth. It's tricky at first, but you get the hang of it, promise.

I've not been very adventurous with food if I'm honest. I had great plans to be, but I haven't managed it yet. I'm just 'eating' ensure (There are lots of different types), scandishake (another meal replacement, but this one is just under 600 calories), soups (stay away from the chunky at first unless you have a super awesome blender), porridge (super runny) and I've started having semolina and things like that. I think I'm gonna move onto smoothies soon too, just to have a different taste.

    Hope that helps!

As an edit- I have lost 2 stone since the surgery, so I'm struggling to eat a bit really!

Hi there... I had my sugery 8/26/11. The worst is over!!! I was in the hospital over night. I was lucky to have my husband home with me the first few days and then his mother for 2 more days after that.

My lower jaw was moved forward and my upper jaw was moved and cut for assymetry. I was wired shut for 3 weeks with a stint. That means I was really wired shut. No talking and nothing but liquids that I could get through a syringe stuck in the back of my mouth.

Sleeping was difficult because I was wired shut and I felt like I couldn't breathe because of the congestion in my nose. Have lots of pillows to prop yourself up.

If this is what you're going to go through, here's my tips:

    - don't have too much OJ. The acid messed up my stomach, making me throw up (not pleasant when wired shut). I was also having more light headedness due to the OJ.

    - I wasn't able to get anything thicker than chocolate milk down so the apple sauce, pudding and shakes didn't come into play until after the 3 weeks.

    - get a juicer. Jack La Lane has a good one. This helped with getting some vitamins and giving more variety.

    - have lots of rags! I was like a baby. I had to have a "bib" any time I tried to get something down because inevitably some of it came out of my mouth, drooled down my chin and onto my chest. Yes, even though I was only using a syringe full.

    - for the 1st few days, have a large bowl nearby. The medication didn't agree well with me, be prepared.

    - have lots of chapstick nearby. My lips were incredibly dry. My Dr. advised against vaseline because some patients of hers got an infection.

GOOD LUCK and take a deep breath... soon this will all be a memory :)
