Any form of jaw surgery can be debilitating. Between pain and swelling you will experience discomfort that will mean your normal day routines are difficult to follow
It’s situations like these that remind us not to take the simple things for granted. I feel for you, and I hope you have a speedy recovery. Swelling and other symptoms can surface post-surgery, and it’s important that you know how to manage that swelling and do everything you can to promote a healthy recovery.
The first 24 hours after surgery are going to be a little different than the rest of the recovery period. Keep in mind as well the fact that you want to notice if any changes in your symptoms warrant contacting your doctor for further instructions.
You don’t want an infection setting in, and you don’t want any setbacks in terms of your recovery. That said, you want to keep your diet liquid for that first 24 hour period.
You’re going to have to heavily rely on the mouth rinsing, too. One reason for that is you will be gently brushing your teeth, and you won’t be using your regular toothbrush. You’re going to have a baby toothbrush on hand. Therefore, to keep your mouth clean and free from infection and further swelling, the rinsing twice a day rule is in effect.
While you want to handle recovery instructions properly to minimize swelling and other symptoms, you do want to realize that swelling is going to happen. In fact, you’re going to notice quite a bit of swelling during the first week of recovery. There are specific steps you can take to help minimize swelling, so let’s go over your options.
One thing you can do is to use an ice pack.
Having worked for an after-school program, I know there are those commercial ice packs that people like to use. In this case, however, you’re instructed to do things the old-fashioned way.
Get yourself a bag, and put ice in it. Then you’re going to wrap a towel around the bag. Now you will be ready with your homemade ice pack, and you can apply it to your face. Be gentle of course, and keep in mind that the timeframe for this is about 15 minutes.
You can apply the bag of ice in a towel multiple times a day, but you want to only do it in 15-minute increments. Notice I didn’t call it an ice pack this time. It’s not that an ice pack won’t work, but it’s just better to go ahead and follow the doctor’s orders and have an actual homemade ice pack or bag of ice with a towel wrap to help you out.
The salt water rinses will help, too, in terms of reducing swelling and minimizing any pain and discomfort. And you’re going to want some Ibuprofen on hand to be sure. With that, and taking the other necessary steps, you should be just fine.
What you will notice is that after the first week, the swelling will start to be reduced. There can still be some swelling of course after the first week, but the hard part should be over.
In fact, you could notice a significant difference in the first few days. What you want to be sure that you do is follow the doctor’s orders. It’s not just about knowing what to do in the event of swelling. It’s about nursing everything properly and following all instructions so that you recover according to the specified timeline. You don’t want any setbacks as mentioned.
