This is a very personal question that only you can answer for yourself Jess, but for me personally, it was 100% worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Just make sure you weigh your own pros and cons and talk them through with your surgeon before making this important decision.

Hi Josh,

I was actually referred to my surgeon by my orthodontist. Fortunately, the place he referred me to was an entire maxillofacial center, so I had several doctors to choose from.

I really clicked with the second surgeon I consulted with, and he was already friends with my orthodontist, so they had a great working and personal relationship.

I was also lucky in that my surgeon actually taught other surgeons how to perform this surgery, so I was really confident and comfortable in his ability and expertise.

The most important thing in choosing a surgeon is to be completely comfortable with them, and it's great if they have a long track record and credentials you can check out.

If you curious and are willing to travel that far already, my surgeon was Dr. Wlodawsky, located in Richmond, Virginia in the United States.

I hope that helps, and if you have any other questions, or just want to chat with other jaw surgery patients and ask about their surgeons, you should come join us on the forums here:

Thanks,

Hi Brandon,

Thank you for sharing your experience regarding your surgery. I have been wanting to have this surgery for almost 15 years! My burning question is this - how did you go about finding the best surgeon to do your surgery? I am from the Philippines and have traveled to Dallas several years ago to meet an oral & maxillofacial surgeon but have not pushed through with the surgery because my parents thought the surgery was too complicated and totally unnecessary.

Thanks in advance.
